Framing FAQ

Frequently Asked Framing Questions

You Have Questions? We Have Answers

In these over 40 years, we have seen almost everything. At FRAMEWORKS, we also work to keep ourselves up-to-date with the latest materials, trends, and changes in art (such as the move from film to digital printing).

There are always questions about picture framing, preparation of art, available materials, and our services. Here are some of the more common questions (with quick answers).

What can I get framed?

Over the years, we have framed almost everything. Besides paper art, we frame paintings on canvases, needlework, 3D objects (such as sports shirts, christening gowns, shells, tools, fossils, and collectibles) – almost anything that you can think of. We can create a custom mirror to fit your space too.

Our largest framing projects are pieces that require rental trucks for delivery. (One was 6 x 8 feet.) Our smallest (we think) was a single antique Christmas seal stamp in a frame of 3 x 4 inches.

How long does it take?

With in-stock materials, we generally run 7 to 10 days from the selection of your materials to the finished work ready for pickup. Framing with special order materials can take 3 to 4 weeks, particularly with Covid related supply and delivery issue.

Can I get it faster?

Since all work is done on the premises, we can offer rush services by taking advantage of our large in-house stock.

What is your Do-It-Yourself Workshop about?

It is hands-on but with instruction. We do the cutting and show you how to assemble and complete your project. You can expect about two hours of work time for a typical wood frame. That doesn’t include the time to choose materials and have them prepared. You can choose your materials one day, and have everything ready to go for DIY day. Note that our DIY workshop hours are different from our store hours.

How much can I save with Do-It-Yourself Workshop?

The material cost is the same for both custom and DIY. You can save on the custom labor - generally $15 - $40 per piece. Many of our DIY customers enjoy putting their time into their art or project.

Can I just get a mat (or glass or …) ?

Sure! We can usually cut a simple mat (or glass or other materials) while you wait. Bring your art (and frame if you have one). We’ll measure your artwork and make sure it fits the frame before you leave our shop.

Can you stretch my canvas or needlework?

You bet! We have precut stretcher bars and three sizes of stretcher molding that we cut to size for canvas. Needlework is typically stretched onto a board. For needlework, make sure you have it cleaned (if needed) before bringing it in for framing. Additionally, needlepoint may need blocking before we frame it.

What about dry mounting and lamination?

We do both! Dry mounting, done in-house, takes 3 to 5 days. Lamination is ready in 3 to 4 weeks.

What about print-at-home photos?

The world has changed in photography with many photos now printed at home. Our recommendation before framing a special photo is to have it printed, if possible, via a photographic process for the permanence of dyes. This is especially true for any photos that you would like dry mounted.

Can you frame my picture that is in European size?

Not a problem! It just means you probably won’t find a ready made frame for it. However, we can cut materials for any size.

What about FRAMEWORKS coupons?

Coupons are not needed at FRAMEWORKS. We do not artificially inflate our prices so that we can boast of 50% OFF (or more) at all times. Our business is based upon the simple idea that good framing with quality materials does not have to be expensive. With so many options available, we can work with you to fit your budget - and have framed art that will be with you for years to come.

Now a word about our employees and valued customers:

We are proud of our team and the depth of our framing knowledge and experience. FRAMEWORKS has been a part of the Burlington community for over 40 years. We enjoy working with our customers and value the relationships that have been built over the years. (We recently had a customer whose parents had brought her into the store as a toddler on one of their framing projects.)

We love what we do. We are here to help you. We look forward to working with you!
